Water level rises in Saptakoshi damn, red alert

KATHMANDU: Water level in Saptakoshi river has increased due to floods in the mountain regions following incessant rainfall from Sunday evening.

Koshi Barrage Office said that a red flag has been flown at the eastern bank of the barrage since 12:00 noon today.There is a practice of flying red flag and lighting red light at the eastern barrage if there is water flow of 150,000 cusec per second at the barrage in the river.

Water level in the river has been measured as 153,545 cusecs per second at 12:00 noon today while it was 97,145 cusec per second at 6:00 am, said Police Head Constable of Koshi Barrage Office, Ramesh Basnet.

A total of 22 flood gates of the barrage have been opened after the water level crossed the limit of danger this noon.Last year, 28 gates of the barrage were opened in the month of June/July after there was water flow of more than 300,000 cusecs per second. RSS
