US court convicts a Nepali women for murdering infant
Purushottam Dhakal, New York (USA), March 28: A Nepali immigrant residing in the US has been convicted of murdering her newborn infant and handed down ten-year imprisonment sentence.
A New York court had convicted Dava Lama of the murdering which she was proved to have carried out on May 10 last year.
According to the report, Lama had given birth to a baby in a toilet of a New York hospital and had run from the site after dumping the baby in the litter bin.
The baby had died the following day and Lama was also arrested following complaints from the hospital’s authority.
Lama will be deported to Nepal after she serves her sentence in federal prison that will start from April 10. Sources near Lama informed that Lama had been hiding about her pregnancy to her boyfriend and parents.
She had convinced that she had grown fat and that she was not pregnant added the source who preferred anonymity.
Lama was working as beautician in the city. US federal law however allows any women to hand over her infant within five days of the birth to Hospital authorities or fire fighters if they wish so.
