UML ready to provide alternative PM candidate if Congress can’t: Pokhrel
KATHMANDU: CPN UML Secrtary Shankar Pokhrel has called on Nepali Congress to provide Prime Ministerial candidate to form national consensus government. He claimed that his party would provide alternative PM candidate if NC failed to do so within a week.
Speaking at the Reporters Club Nepal on Monday, Pokhrel said that there were contentions among political parties in supporting NC’s candidate.
Stating that the party has failed to resolve its internal row on finalizing the candidate, he called on the party to support other party’s candidate for the post.
“Congress has neither been able to provide its own candidate, nor has it shown willingness to support other party’s candidate,” said Pokhrel adding, ” nation cannot move ahead in such a status quo”.
UCPN Maoist politburo member Shakti Basnet also claimed that the caretaker Bhattarai government should step down, and that the new consensus government should be formed in NC’s leadership.
While stating that even the President cannot remove the PM without political consensus, he said that his party would support NC’s leadership.
“There is no point in seeking caretaker PM’s resignation. As soon as the consensus PM candidate is agreed between parties, there will be headway in impasse.”
