Third gender receives citizenship

Makawanpur: Makawanpur district administration office for the first time issued a citizenship card to a person identified as third gender.

Ajita Bhujel, 23, of Hetauda was granted Nepali citizenship. “I had to go through a lot of trouble to be issued the citizenship card’’ The Himalayan Times Daily quoted Ajita, adding that now it has been ensured that even third gender members of society are eligible to receive citizenship cards without having to hide their sexual identity.

‘’I did not have any proof of origin and citizenship even though I was born in Nepal, but now I have legal proof of my real identity.’

Programme coordinator of Blue Diamond Society Suraj Thapa said, “Ajita’s citizenship card is a significant achievement for the third gender as she is the second person in the country to get the card.’’
