Tharus call off terai band following negotiations with govt.

KATHMANDU: Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN) has called off all programmes of agitation after the decision of the government of providing Rs. one million to the family of Dhan Bahadur Tharu Thanet by declaring him Martyr.

According to Chairman of the NEFIN, Raj Kumar Lekhi, welcoming the decision of the Council of Ministers, the NEFIN and the Tharu Struggle Committee have withdrawn all the protest programmes.

Thanet, who was injured from a bullet of police at Danda in Nawalparasi on May 9, died while undergoing treatment at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj, on Tuesday night.

The body of Thanet had been taken to Nawalparasi this morning and his funeral rites will be performed at Narayani River today, said Lekhi. The NEFIN had released different programmes of agitation including Tarai banda demanding that the government should declare Thanet a Martyr. RSS
