Speaker’s election on 26 January

KATHMANDU: Election of the Speaker of the House of Representatives (HoR) is scheduled for January 26. The senior-most member at the HoR Mahantha Thakur had chaired the second session of the HoR meeting today, where he directed the General Secretary of Federal Parliament Secretariat Manohar Prasad Bhattarai to make necessary preparations for the speaker’s election.
Earlier, session chair Thakur read out the resignation letter of deputy speaker Dr Shiva Maya Tumbahamphe in the meeting. According to the election schedule, the filing of nominations to the post of the speaker will begin at 11:00 am and will conclude at 2:00 pm Tuesday.
The final list of the candidates would be published at 2:30 pm Tuesday itself. The post of the speaker remains vacant after then speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara resigned from his post following an accusation of rape by a staff of the federal parliament secretariat on October 1.
Secretary at the Ministry Dipak Subedi said that the bill was brought with the move to make not only the editors and reporters accountable but also the concerned media house.
