Sankata runner-up after 33 years

Kumar Chaulagain, KATHMANDU: Sankata Club is certain to end runner-up in the Martyrs Memorial A divisional league football.
Sankata confirmed the spot after beating Three Star Club by 2-1 in the match held at the ANFA ground in Satdobato, Lalitpur on Wednesday.
This will be the best performance of the club in the past 33 years. Prior to this, Sankata had won the league in 2042 B.S. It has won the league for a total of three times.
Sankata has garnered 28 points from 12 games to clinch the second spot. It follows Manang Marsyandi Club that is also certain to come out as winner of the league. With the second position, Sankata will win a cash prize of Rs. 3.5 million. The first prize is Rs. 5 million.
In the match today, Amit Tamang scored both the goals for Sankata and both from the penalty spot. The first goal however was scored by Ranjan Bista of Three Star in the 30th minute and it was neutralized by Amit in the 42nd minute of the match. Amit scored again in the 63rd minute, after Saujan Rai was fouled inside the box by Bikram Lama of the opposite team. Amit was also declared the man-of-the-match.
Three Star is currently in the third position with 23 points. But the third position will be finalized with the 13th round of matches to be held tomorrow. Tribhuvan Army Club, with 22 points, is also in the race for the third position. Both have a game to play tomorrow.
Also today, the Manang Marsyangdi Club defeated Himalayan Sherpa Club by 2-1 to remain undefeated so far. MMC will now play its final match of the league against Brigade Boys Club.
The Brigade Boys stand in the seventh position to date with 17 points from 12 games. RSS
