President seeks clarification over recommendations of Election Commissioners
KATHMANDU: President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav has sought clarification from Chairperson of Interim Election Council Khil Raj Regmi, who also chairs the Constitutional Council, for nominating the retired election commissioners for their reappointment in the Election Commission of Nepal.
On the recommendation of the High Level Political Committee, the Constitutional Council had asked the President to reappoint former Chief Commissioner Neelkantha Uprety, and former commissioners Dolakh Bahadur Gurung and Ayodhi Prasad Yadav in the Election Commission.
The Office of the President asked the constitutional council whether re-appointment of commissioners of the Election Commission to the same post is as per the Interim Constitution or not.
The Article 128 (7) of the Interim Constitution does not let the appointment of former commissioners. The Article states, “A person once appointed as the Chief Election Commissioner or the Election Commissioner shall not be eligible for appointment in other government service.”Regmi is preparing to forge the clarification to the Office of the President today itself after the meeting with the High Level Political Committee.
