PM Bhattarai’s conditions thwart consensus efforts

KATHMANDU:
The consensus efforts of the party went into vain today after the Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai remained adamant to resign only after amending the constitution and announce the date of another Constituent Assembly election.
The much-hyped consensus attempt foiled following the Prime Minister Dr Bhattarai’s refusal to resign in the existing situation.
Prime Minister Dr Bhattarai put forth the conditions of completing the peace process, formation of Truth and Reconciliation Commission and Commission on Disappearance, amendment of the constitutional provision, announcing the date of the election and giving his government a shape of national consensus for a time-being before stepping down from the government.

The opposition parties have warned that the Prime Minister’s latest condition could jeopardize the consensus building process at a time when the UCPN (Maoist) has been claiming for the consensus within some days by giving a respectable exit to the government through a package deal.
