Nepali students endangered due to poaching by low grade Indian Engineering colleges

KATHMANDU: Stakeholders of engineering education in Nepal have expressed their grievances for losing engineering students every year due to the ‘poaching’ of Nepali students by the Indian colleges.
Although Nepal has been imparting quality education on engineering courses, a large number of students go to India for obtaining engineering degrees with a hope of completing the courses spending less amount of money than they would spend in Nepal, they stated.
Representatives of Association of Engineering Colleges of Nepal (AECoN ) stated that though there are some good colleges in India, majority of the colleges which lure the Nepali students are of lower standard.
“They do not focus on practical education. Due to that, Nepali students who return back with engineering degrees, could not work effectively,” they argued.
Laxman Pokharel, chairperson of the AoECON, said, “I am really surprised by knowing that the Indian colleges have been enrolling students on the spot during education fairs organised at Five-Star hotels of Kathmandu. A Nepali student needs to spend only Rs. 500,000 that also covers the lodging and food costs.”
“From the amount of Rs. 500,000 paid by each student, these colleges also provide commission to the Nepali institutes for managing students and the same amount also covers the accommodation of representatives during their stay in Kathmandu. How can an engineering college provide quality education with such a meager amount?”
The Nepali colleges have been charging Up to Rs. 700,000 to Rs. 1,200,000 from a student based on their performance.
Ramesh Shrestha, general secretary of the AoECON, stated that quality of engineering education could not be maintained because the Indian colleges have been enrolling students without conducting entrance examination.
Shrestha demanded a national level entrance examination like that of medical education should be put in place for getting in engineering colleges both in Nepal and abroad.
Shrestha informed that now Nepal has a capacity to enroll about 10,633 students in 48 engineering colleges across the country under different universities. The constituent campuses could enroll 3096 students and affiliated 7,537 students.
Surprisingly, only about 60 to 65 per cent of students of the total capacity of the engineering colleges are opting to study in Nepal while around 7,000 students go to India and other countries for engineering degrees every year, Gopi Neupane, chairperson of AoECON’s Purbanchal University Chapter, said.
According to Neupane, about 80 per cent courses of engineering are same globally and per cent of the courses are designed to fit the requirements of local market.
So, the students studying engineering courses in Nepal mainly study hydropower, suspension bridge and topics that have high potential in Nepal while Nepali students studying in India are mostly found pursuing thermal and nuclear plant courses as well as railway engineering that have high growth potential in Nepal now, he added.
With the decrease in the number of students enrolled in engineering colleges, the Association of Engineering Colleges of Nepal has decided to organise an engineering fair to attract students towards engineering education in Nepal.
The AECON is going to hold the first AECON Engineering Edu Fair- 2019 on July 10-11 with a slogan “Requirement of Prosperous Nepal, Engineering Education within Nation” at Pragya Bhawan, Kamaladi. The organisers have expected about 10, 000 visitors would visit the fair.
