Nepali Migrant workers attacked in Malaysia; Number of victims not clear MoFA
Malaysia: Confirming that Nepali migrant workers were attacked in Malayasia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) said on Monday that scores of them have been reportedly injured but the number of victims is yet to be known.
“The Ministry has received a report that some Nepalese nationals working in Malaysia have met with the sad incident of attack by some people in Johor Bahru of Malaysia yesterday evening in which scores have been reportedly injured,” MoFA said, “The exact number of the Nepalese facing the fatal incident is yet to be known.”
Earlier media reports informed that at least six Nepalis were murdered when an armed group of locals attacked the former’s qaurters in the Malaysian state of Johor Bahru.
“The Embassy official is in close contact with the police authorities in Malaysia to find out the exact number of the injured,” MoFA said.
Also, the Embassy of Nepal has appealed the Nepali workers to remain calm while the Embassy continues to do everything possible for their safety and security in Malaysia in coordination with the host authorities.
The local administration clamped curfew in the incident site after local police failed to take the situation into control. Police used some rounds of blank fire to take the situation into control. All the injured Nepali workers have been undergoing treatment at Sultan Hospital. Malaysia is the popular labor destination for Nepali youths. Every year 500 thousand Nepali youths desert the country in search of better opportunities abroad. The incident proves that Nepali migrant workers are not safe.
