Nepal to lead Climate Change Convention

KATHMANDU: Nepal has been elected as the coordinator of group of least developed countries for Climate Change Convention (CCC).

Earlier to this Gambia was the coordinator of the group. Nepal is the second country to lead the group from Asia after Bangladesh, according to Krishna Gyawali, secretary at the Ministry of Environment.

Speaking at a programme organized by Nepal Forum of Environmental Journalists (NeFEJ), Gyawali said Nepal would coordinate the talks group of least developed countries for 2013 and 2014 under the climate change convention.

A meeting of the group that concluded last week in Germany took a decision to this effect after Bangladesh withdrew its nomination. A total of 48 countries are represented the group.

Basically, the group prepares policy to reduce the problems caused by the climate change and takes initiative for collective bargaining against the impacts of climate changes caused due to developed countries.

Secretary Gyawali said this was both opportunity and challenge for Nepal. RSS
