KATHMANDU: Over 5,000 people committed suicides in the country last year.
People apparently chose to take life themselves when their relations did not go as per expectations; when the exam results did not meet the expectation; and when the unwanted pressure mounted from the families and the circle.
According to the data provided by the Nepal Police Headquarters, a total of 5,155 people committed suicide last fiscal year that ended on July 16. There are various forms of killing self as hanging (3,000), poisoning (1,182), jumping (47), drowning (23), setting oneself on fire (22), using weapons (13) and electric shock (4) and using explosive device (1).
Central Police Spokesperson and Deputy Inspector General of Police, Bishwaraj Pokhrel, said domestic issues, strained relations and difficulties in affair have been seen as common factors provoking the suicide. But, the number of suicide cases had slightly decreased last fiscal year compared to the previous fiscal year (5,317). Of the total cases reported last fiscal, 539 had taken place in the Kathmandu Valley alone.
