Nepal registers impressive win over UAE
KATHMANDU: Nepal has registered an impressive victory over home team United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the second One-Day International under the Nepal-UAE series today.
Nepal trounced the UAE by 145 runs in the match held at ICC Cricket Academy ground in Dubai.
Electing to bat first after winning the toss, Nepal set a victory target of 243 after scoring 242 runs at the loss of nine wickets in the stipulated 50 overs. Chasing the target, UAE could gather only 97 runs becoming all-out in 19.3 overs.
Nepali bowler duo Sompal Kami and Sandeep Lamichhane delivered outstanding performance by taking five and four wickets respectively to limit the UAE to a meager total. It was a first five-wicket haul for a Nepali bowler in ODI cricket.
Nepal improved its batting performance and posted a respectful total in today’s match. Owing to batting failures, Nepal had lost the first match in the series on Friday by 3 wickets.
Batsman Rohit Kumar Poudel scored a record half century propelling Nepal to an impressive total. Rohit scored 55 in 58 balls. Likewise, vice captain Gyanendra Malla made 44 followed by Arif Shekh (29), and captain Paras Khadka and Binod Bhandari (21) each.
Sandeep Lamichhane was not out on 14 runs while Karan KC gathered 18 runs. Another batsman Deependra Singh Airy made 10 runs.
UAE bowlers Imran Hedar and Amir Hayat took three wickets each. Sompal Kami who took five wickets was declared the ‘man of the match’.
With the spectacular win, Nepal has leveled the three match series to 1-1. The decisive match between the two teams is scheduled to take place on Monday.
Young batsman of Nepali national team Rohit Kumar Poudel set a record in international ODI cricket. Rohit became the youngest player in the world to score a half century in international ODI cricket match.
Rohit was 16 years and 146 days while smashing the half century in today’s one-day international, which is maiden half century in international cricket. While doing so, Rohit broke the records of Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar and Pakistani batsman Shahid Afridi.
Sachin had scored a half century when he was 16 years and 213 days while Afridi held this record at the age of 16 years 217 days.
