NEFIN flays indigenous status to caste groups

KATHMANDU: A day after the government agreed to include five castes in the indigenous list, the Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN) on Friday slammed the decision.

Referring to the definition of indigenous nationalities given by the United Nations Declaration on Indigenous Rights, the organization announced stern protest programs against the bid.

On Thursday the government had agreed to register Brahmins, Chhetris, Thakuris, Dashnamis and Dalits in the indigenous list, following discussions between the government and the Joint Struggle Committee.

NEFIN has announced a three-day bandh starting from Sunday until Tuesday as a strategy to pile up pressure on the government to withdraw the decision.
