NC president lambastes government of hijacking rights

KASKI: Nepali Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba has accused the government of hijacking the rights of several sectors as the judiciary, the media, among others, one after the other.

The president of the main opposition party made this charge while inaugurating the annual general meeting of Nepal Democratic Lawyers’ Association. Also the former Prime Minister, Deuba charged that the government attempted to even make the Constitutional Council its puppet.

On the occasion, he called on all to make Khem Raj Poudel, the Nepali Congress’ candidate for the by-election for the member of the House of Representatives and a leader who has made a contribution to the development of Kaski since long, victorious in the November 30 by-election.

Party’s senior leader Ram Chandra Poudel said the government has prepared to bring an ordinance related to the Constitutional Council with the ill intention of establishing its control over the constitutional commissions and suggested that the President should not endorse this ordinance.

General Secretary Dr Shashank Koirala said the upcoming by-election is like a referendum and urged the party’s leaders and cadres to work for making the Nepali Congress’ candidates victorious by winning the hearts of the people.

Central member Dr Minendra Rijal stressed on the need of party unity for the protection of democracy and the constitution.

Association president Yogendra Bahadur Adhikari, general secretary Laxmi Dahal, former president Sher Bahadur KC, Phanindra Koirala among the speakers argued that the role of an independent judiciary would be enhanced only in democracy as the independent judiciary and democracy were interrelated.

Sub-editor at Rastriya Samachar Samiti (the National News Agency) Jeevan Bhandari and chief editor of ‘hamrakura.com’ Ajaya Babu Shiwakoti were honoured on the occasion for contributing to the protection and promotion of law, justice and democracy through journalism.
