Leaders formally propose CJ to lead election government; Discussion to continue tomorrow
Kathmandu: Top leaders of the four major political forces—UCPN-Maoist, Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and United Democratic Madhesi Front held discussion with Chief Justice (CJ) Khil Raj Regmi about leadership of the election government at the official residence of Chief Justice in Baluwatar on Wednesday evening.
The leaders formally proposed the Chief Justice to lead the election government and assured him that they will adjust the technical issues of the nine-point agreement among the political parties. The meeting decided to continue discussion on some technical issues for the new government. The meeting will take place Thursday as well to finalize the constitutional issues like how to give leadership to the independent person as the Interim Constitution does not have such provision. It is reported that the CJ is positive towards leading the election government if political parties fulfill his condition. However CJ remained tight lipped about the new government.
The meeting took place after the CJ during his meeting with the prime minister Tuesday morning had expressed his ´unwillingness´ to head the proposed election government with conditions. He had maintained that he would not lead the government if there was no consensus among political parties and had even questioned the commitments of the political parties to hold Constituent Assembly elections by May-end. The CJ expressed reservation over nine-point understanding among the four political parties,
Regmi was mainly dissatisfied with the clause that the election government under his leadership would automatically be scrapped if it fails to hold the election by mid-June. According to sources, the leaders are ready to extend the tenure of Regmi’s government even if for some reason it cannot hold the elections by mid-June.
Maoist Chairperson Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai; Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala and senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuwa; CPN-UML chairperson Jhala Nath Khanal and senior leader K. P. Sharma Oli; and Bijay Kumar Gachhadar and Mahanta Thakur of United Democratic Madheshi Front called on Chief Justice to discuss the modalities of the election government led by him. The four major political parties held meeting before meeting the Chief Justice.
The meeting scheduled for this morning postponed for evening after some leaders of CPN-UML including senior Leader Madhav Kumar Nepal expressed storing reservation over the idea of CJ led government and urged the party to correct its earlier decision to support the CJ led government.
Some political parties have expressed strong reservation over the CJ led government and warned that they will organize protest program if the decision was not revoked.
