Govt. initiates signature campaign for Unitary-ethnic-federalism, partners deny

KATHMANDU: With the parties still at odds over disputed issues of constitution writing, the government has initiated signature campaign in favor unitary-ethnic-identity federalism.

Prime Minister’s Secretariat and office called ruling coalition partners’s lawmakers and cabinet members to submit their signatures in favor of unitary ethnic identity federalism.

The directive has been flaunted by many of the coalition partner parties, which differ on the issue. Though Maoist and Morcha have been in support of the unitary-ethnic-identity federalism, most of other coalition partners including CPN ML, CPN UML (Socialist), Nepal Parivar Dal, Chure Bhavar Rashtriya Ekta Party Nepal, Rashtriya Prajatantra Party, and CPN UML have been standing in opposition to this demand.
Following directives from the PMO, ministers from these parties have engaged in internal discussions and are mulling on resigning from their post, instead of signing the demand sources confirmed.
