Ex-Maoist combatants put off protests
They have adjourned the pre-scheduled street demonstration with the government and the Unified CPN (Maoist) turning to be positive towards their demands, said Kabi Lama, a combatant living in third division.
Earlier, the disgruntled ex-fighters had taken to street on Friday to protest the army integration process.
They came up with the decision to stop the street protest, set to be staged up to 12 noon today, after Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai including other UCPN (Maoist) leaders gave positive nod to their demands, Lama further said.
The integration process saw halt across the country when they ascended to street from the cantonment and chanted slogans against the selection process, terming it ‘disrespectful’.
The ex-combatants have put forward six-point demands including respectful integration, acceptance to existing educational qualification of combatants and scrapping age limit during integration, arrangement of payment to those opting for voluntary retirement through checks in lump sum and granting compensation to the combatants whose human rights were infringed during the decade-long armed conflict.
Before this, 70 ex-fighters were selected for the army integration till Friday. RSS
