Discussions moving towards positive end: leaders

KATHMANDU: Leaders of various political parties have said that the recent positive developments would help resolve the contentious issues in the constitution making process, and thereby lead to the promulgation of the new constitution as per schedule.

Speaking at an interaction organized in the capital on Tuesday, Nepali Congress leader Arjun Narsingh KC said arguments, counter-arguments and dialogue as a time when the country was heading towards a new epoch were elements of a democracy.

Stating that the major party leaders have reached near to consensus on the contentious issues of form of governance, electoral system, judiciary, citizenship and federalism, he claimed that a final decision would soon be made to ensure that the constitution is promulgated before May 27.

Maoist leader Dev Prasad Gurung however complained that the constitution making process was not moving ahead in a satisfactory manner, and said the cantonments were captured in the name of restoring peace.

He denied the claims that the Hattiban meeting had led to a near consensus situation, and emphasized on the need of adopting federalism based on ethnicity.

UML Secretary Yubaraj Gyawali claimed that the Hattiban meeting ended positively despite some serious challenges to be addressed.

He also pointed out the need for the parties to give up their respective partisan position and work together to institutionalize the changes brought about by the people’s movement 2006 through a new constitution that incorporates people of all castes and communities. RSS
