Detainees bearing brunt of budget deficit
BHADRAPUR: It appears that detainees in Jhapa district jail have to lose their lives without anything to eat due to lack of budget.
Even the prisoners do not have received Rs. 45 a day, which they are entitled to get, for the past 15 days owing to budget deficit.
Presently, the prison management has distributed rice to detainees by bringing the food grain on credit.
The rule is it that the prison has to provide the cash and 700 grams of rice every day to the prisoner for their subsistence.
The government-allocated budget of Rs. 12 million has been already spent in the current fiscal year, said Prison In-charge Khagendra Giri.
Telephone line of the prison has been cut off in the lack of budget. Various problems have emerged in absence of telephone service at the prison office.
Telephone service has been out of gear for the past one month for not clearing the dues of Rs. 50,000, Giri said.
‘There are altogether 547 detainees in the prison and only nine toilets have been arranged for the huge number’, he further informed, adding that it has increased chances of infection of various disease among the prisoners. RSS
