Demand to declare Buddha the Light of the Universe

KATHMANDU: A demand has been made to name Lord Buddha as the ‘Light of the Universe’.  At a programme organized on the International Day of Peace in the capital on Saturday, the speakers said that Lord Buddha should be declared the Light of the Universe by recalling the Buddha’s message for world peace. They also dwelt on the role of the United Nations in Nepal’s foreign policy and world peace and development in the changed context.
On the occasion, former ambassador Dr Bishnu Hari Nepal presented a working paper on the world peace while commenting on the paper senior advocate Krishna Prasad Bhandari, former minister Chandra Dev Joshi, Krishna Raj Barma, Chairman of Puspalal Study Society Lokkrishna Bhattarai, journalist Ramkrishna Karmacharya, Dr Shashtra Dutta Panta, Prof Dr Khem Bandhu Koirala and others stressed the need for translation of the good will for world peace into practice.
The International Day of Peace is being observed since 1982 across the world at the call of the United Nations in 1981 but Nepal started to observe the Day of Peace since 2008. Each year, the Day is observed on 21 September and this year’s too it was observed with the theme of “The Right to Peace-The Declaration of Human Rights at 70”.
