Cooperatives demand umbrella organization
KATHMANDU: The multi-purpose cooperatives have been demanding own umbrella organization for long but the government has not heeded the demand.
The multi-purpose cooperatives which have a vital role in the national economy have invested capital in various sectors in the rural community.
The experts on the cooperatives said they had proposed ‘Nepal Multi-purpose Central Cooperatives’ Association Limited’ as the name of the umbrella organization and applied in the Department of Cooperatives for registration five months back, but no action was taken to this regard till date, said Suredra Bhandari, Executive Director of the Gurans Multi-purpose Cooperatives.
There are altogether 22,000 cooperatives while the number of multi-purpose cooperatives stands at 4,300.
It is said more than 50 million rupees was mobilized by the multi-purpose cooperatives.
Once the umbrella organization was set up, it would be easy to run the multi-purpose cooperatives in a systematic way, Mr. Bhandari added. RSS
