China tightens security along Tibet borders
By Harold Mandel:
As the situation remains tense in Tibet there are deep concerns China has simply decided to adhere to a policy of keeping up the heat on the Tibetans. In fact it has been reported that China has tightened security measures along the Tibet border. Tendar Tsering has reported for Phayul.com “China tightens security in Tibetan border region.” In a measure to block Tibetans from fleeing into exile after joining in public demonstrations and protests China has tightened security in Tibetan areas bordering India and Nepal.

Passang Dolma, a Tibetan in exile, has quoted contacts in the region as saying “As a result of the chain of self-immolations and demonstrations in eastern and central Tibet, China has tightened security in the Tibetan areas bordering India and Nepal.” Dolma has said that since early this year, China has deployed extra armed and plain security officers in towns and villages in the border areas. Dolma has also said “Besides deploying armed soldiers, the Chinese government has also set up committees in every village and town to spy and report on Tibetan activities in the border regions.”
There have been thousands of Tibetans who have taken part in multiple public protests since January of this year, with demands for freedom in Tibet and the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama from exile. It has been reported in many instances the Chinese security personnel have opened indiscriminate fire on the unarmed protesters, killing and wounding many Tibetans. Also, Chinese authorities have led large-scale manhunts of Tibetans who have been suspected of taking part in the protests. The situation today remains tragically oppressive for the Tibetans, with the tightening of Tibet’s borders by the Chinese only serving to intensify their anxieties. (examiner)
