Children as well as country’s proud- Pushpa Basnet- awarded “CNN Hero 2012”

“CNN 2012 Hero from Kathmandu is Pushpa Basnet,” as soon as the popular CNN host Anderson Cooper announced the name of Pushpa Basnet amid a gala ceremony at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon, Basnet burst into tears.
While she approached towards the stage to receive the award, clapping and cheering of the audiences rocked the ceremony.
“Definitely, Mamu’s going to take you out from the prison and you’re coming to my place. This is for my children, and this is for my back to country for my Nepal. Thank you so much everybody who voted for me and who believed in my dream,” emotional Basnet said while receiving the award.

Following the announcement of the award, the social networking sites including facebook and twitter are flooded with the messages of congratulation and best wishes to the Basnet.
“A proud moment for Nepal and Nepalese around the globe! Humanity still has got upper hand in this world,” Rajan Gautam tweeted in the Twitter.

As a ‘CNN Hero 2012”, Basnet has been conferred a trophy of ‘CNN Hero 2011’ along with a prize amount of 2 hundred and 50 thousand dollar award. Pushpa has said that she would spend the award money for the welfare of the children who are languishing in the prison with their jailed-parents.
Thousands of nominations from more than hundred countries had filed for the CNN Hero, one of the prestigious awards in the world. She had reached to the top 10 finalists of the ‘CNN Hero’ through the selection process that kicked off eight months ago following the internet process of nomination.
Basnet, 28, has struggled a lot for 7 years to receive this achievement.

“Nepal is one of the poorest countries, and space is very limited in the few group homes affiliated with the government. So when a parent is incarcerated and no other guardian can be found, children have little choice but to live in prison as well. Basnet, 29, is determined to give these children another option,” CNN in its online portal reports.
