Cardamom cashing millions of rupees to Khotang farmers
Khotang,: A person of Khotang district has been transacting the cash crop cardamom worth Rs two million annually. Cardamom is known as black gold.
Chandra Bahadur Katwal, 45, of Mattim-9, Naulakharka Ahale, has been making the transaction by producing 50 man of cardamom annually by farming cardamom in around 34 ropanis of land.
Price of cardamom has reached upto Rs 40,000 per man of late, said Katwal.
Farmers like Katwal of the district have been attracted towards cardamom farming because of the good income from it.
Similarly, another farmer Bhim Rai of Temma-8, Ribhu, has also making transaction of more than Rs three million per year from cardamom business, said locals.
Rai buys cardamom produced in the village and sells it. Rai has been able to buy land even in Tarai from the income of the cardamom business.
According to the Agriculture Development Office, Khotang, cardamom has been farmed on 165 hectares of land in the district and 65 metric tons of cardamom has been produced from it annually.
Some of the farmers in the district have started cardamom farming by quitting paddy farming and are being self-reliant from it. RSS
