Call to reinstate 1990 constitution
KATHMANDU: The People’s Movement Campaign Central Committee for the Reinstatement of the Constitution of Nepal, 1990 has called for reviving the 1990 constitution.
The committee raised this demand at a news conference it held here on Tuesday, stating that the Interim Constitution of Nepal, 2007 has also been terminated with the dissolution of the Constituent Assembly and the 1990 constitution could be an alternative for giving a way out from the political instability.
Coordinator of the committee, Devendra Nepali, said since the Interim Constitution was formulated with the objective of constituting the Constituent Assembly and issuing the new constitution through it, it is ultra vires rendered null and void as it has failed to meet its objectives with the dissolution of the Assembly.
‘The then dissolved House of Representatives had been reinstated with the endorsement by the People’s Movement-2 of the letter and spirit of the 1990 constitution and that this constitution had been framed through the collaboration of all sides so that this constitution could vest the sovereignty on the people and help maintain national unity, ‘ Nepali said.
The committee also referred to instances in different countries including Pakistan and Indonesia where the old constitutions had been revived after the Constituent Assemblies of these countries failed. RSS
