Badis now face threat from natural disasters

SURKHET: The Badi communities living in different places of Surkhet district are doing so in areas at high risk of natural disasters. They also do not have land in their names.

This is stated in a report prepared by the District Badi Rights Association after carrying out a monitoring in all the Village Deevelopment Committees (VDCs) in the district.

The report states that the Badi settlements are mostly found located in places at high risk of natural disasters near the river banks or on the edge of the forests and away from the other communities.

It has also been found that the Badi people living near the river banks at Latikoili, Satakhani, Maintada, Ghumkhahare, Malarani, Rakam, Chhinchu and Ghoreta, among other VDCs, do not have land in their names.

They are also not availing of the facilities allotted them by the government due to the government’s apathy, many Badi youths are jobless as the reservation quota set aside for the community has not been implemented effectively and many Badi children are out of school due to lack of awareness and illiteracy among the parents.
