Five Chinese nationals arrested for hacking Nepal’s ATM system
KATHMANDU: ATM service of majority of bank has been stopped for indefinite period of time. Due to the inconvenience in withdrawing money from ATMs, especially during the festival season, many customers have complaint about the problem.
Central Bank, Nepal Rastra Bank confirms that the server of NIC Asia Bank and Prabhu Bank is down. The Spokesperson of Nepal Rastra Bank, Laxmi Prapanna Niraula says, similar problem has been seen in other banks as well. He adds, “We are trying to fix the problem as soon as possible”.
It is speculated that the said hacking is done by the same gang who in the past had withdrawn cash from ATMs in an authorized manner.
According to Kathmandu Police Chief Uttam Raj Subedi, “one of the systems associated with the Visa Card has been hacked”.According to the sources, banks that are using the ATM system of the company called Nepse is currently dysfunctional. Around 12-15 banks in Nepal have been using the system of this company.
Last night, police has successfully arrested five Chinese citizens from Durbar Marg, who were caught red handed while stealing money from the ATM Machine. Kathmandu Police Chief Subedi says, “This operation was a huge success for us as we were successful in preventing the theft of huge money”.
