SC orders PM, AG to appear at court over contempt charge

The Supreme Court Friday issued a show-cause notice to Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai, Attorney General (AG) Mukti Pradhan, on the charges of contempt of court, ordering them to appear personally before the court within 7 days.
The apex court has sought a written explanation from the Prime Minister and AG to clarify whether their intervention upon the investigation process of the murder case of Journalist Dekendra Thapa implies court’s contempt.
According to the Supreme Court spokesperson Shrikant Paudel, a single bench of Justice Sushila Karki has ordered them to furnish written clarifications while responding to the writ petition on contempt of court filed by advocate Kamal Kumar Itani on behalf of Democratic Lawyers’ Association and Nepal Press Union. Advocate Itane has moved to apex court after the government directed the local prosecutor to halt the investigation process of Journalist Thapa’s murder case.
