Another youth sets himself afire in Tibet
Dharamsala (HT):A Tibetan youth in his early twenties has reportedly set himself ablaze in an apparant protest against the Chinese government in eastern Tibet. A CTA official said that Wangyal, a former monk, set himself on fire in Serthar, north-eastern Tibet on Monday.
“Wangyal set himself on fire in front of the golden-horse statue at the local ground in Serthar,” said the official, citing sources in Tibet and added that Chinese authorities immediately took away Wangyal’s body. “Hundreds of local Tibetans later gathered at the site to show their solidarity,” said the official.
He told that Wangyal was a former monk from Taktse township in Serthar. He is the 82nd Tibetan to self-immolate against the policies of the Chinese government.
November alone has reported 20 self-immolations, including by a school student in the Rebkong region of eastern Tibet.
Meanwhile, the official further said that many Tibetan students have been severely injured in the police crackdown during a protest by students against the Chinese government’s policies at Tsolho in north-eastern Tibet.
“Thousands of students of Sorig Lobling (medical school) took to the streets at Chabcha on Monday and raised slogans, demanding equality, freedom and leadership change,” said the official.
“According to the reports many students have been seriously wounded in the ensuing crackdown by armed police and security forces,” said the official adding that those injured were taken to the local hospital.
He said CTA has urged the Chinese authorities to exercise utmost restraint in dealing with the peaceful demonstration by the Tibetan students, and address their grievances through dialogue.
