13 years passed, Badarmude victims still deprived of justice

KATHMANDU: Although 13 years have passed since then rebels CPN Maoist bombed a public passenger bus at Badarmude of Madi in Chitwan district, the family of the victims are still waiting for justice.
Issuing a press release today, Chairman of INSEC Subodh Raj Pyakurel said although the Comprehensive Peace Accord and various other political agreements had mentioned about the justice to conflict victims including that of notorious Badarmude explosion which took the lives of 38 persons, the victims were still deprived of justice and reparation.
On 6 June 2005, the Maoist cadres planted a landmine targeting the bus with the registration number Na 1 Kha 3245, which was full of passengers at local Badarmude in then Kalyanpur VDC of Madi Valley in Chitwan. A total of 38 innocent people, including three security persons, were killed on the spot, while 72 others injured in the explosion. Among those injured, four died later taking the death toll to 42. Among the injured, 10 are still under regular medication.
In the press release, Chairman Pyakurel expressed concern why the government was delaying to cater justice to the victims of such incident which attracts the national and international law and the humanitarian laws.
Immediately after the incident, Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal had admitted the blunder in a press release and mentioned that it would be investigated and the facts made public.
Moreover, during the 2074 election campaign, Maoist Centre Chairman Dahal had agreed with some victims of the Badarmude incident that the victims’ families would be provided employment, subsistence allowance, treatment to the injured ones and construction of a monument
In the press release, INSEC Chair Pyakurel underscored that there were no alternative to justice delivery against such heinous crimes of the conflict. But, the political leadership is felt gradually weakening. The culprits must not be condoned with political patronage, he added.
