105-year-old Nepali widow receives citizenship

KATHMANDU (PTI): A 105-year-old widow living in a remote village in Nepal has finally received her citizenship certificate, making her the eldest person in the country to receive such a document.

Krishna Kumari Gharti, a resident of Pakhapani village of Parvat district in western Nepal, was handed over the certificate on Monday by the District Administration Office after officials travelled to the village, a day’s walk from the district headquarters.

In the remote villages of Nepal, thousands of people who cannot read and write are deprived of citizenship certificates as they neither pursue a business nor join any public service that requires such a certificate.

Gharti has been receiving pension on behalf of her deceased husband for the past few years.

“Her name was registered in the list of elderly at the District Administration Office, who were receiving the monthly allowance and she was happy,” an official at the district administration office said.
