NHRC draws govt’s attention on protecting life of general public
KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has drawn the serious attention of the government towards the murder of Sharad Kumar Gauchan, president of the Federation of Contractors’ Associations of Nepal, in a shooting that took place in broad daylight on Monday. It also called for immediate action against the culprits.
Issuing a press release today, NHRC Spokesperson Mohana Ansari urged the government to promptly launch an effective investigation into the incident and take legal action against the culprits. The NHRC urged the government to ensure the general public’s right to live in a fear-free environment as well.
The human rights commission stated that there was insecurity to the general public with this incident in which a person was shot dead in broad daylight and the security sensitivity was seen weak that Gauchan was killed despite it having the information that his life was under threat.
The violation of article 6 of the International Covenant on the Civil and Political Rights, 1966 to which Nepal is a state party, and the infringement of the right to life provided by article 16 of the Constitution of Nepal due to the State’s inability to protect the life of its citizen is a serious matter, the NHTC stated in the press release.
