Flood havoc in Sunsari, water flow in Koshi Barrage in danger line

ITHARI: Water flow in the Koshi Barrage has become intense in the aftermath of incessant rains since Friday, posing a threat of flood. Water flow in the barrage has been measured at 283 thousand cusec this evening.

Following this, 37 gates, out of 56, have been opened, Sunsari’s Assistant Chief District Officer Rajesh Giri said. It seems that there is a need to open other gates also and a letter has been dispatched to the Home Ministry to inform about the situation, he added.

Water flow exceeding 250 thousand cusec is meant to indicate a danger line and a red light has already been switched-on and a red flag has been hoisted as a signal of increasing risk of river disaster. Water flow above the 300 thousand cusec means the river as a fully danger zone. Water level is likely to go up further as eastern hilly districts continue to see rainfall, he added.

Meanwhile, dozens of settlements in Jalapapur, Chandbela, Narsing, Babiya, Bhutaha and Kaptangunj among others have been inundated after the flooded Sunsari River entered the settlements breaching embankments both sides. Over 10 thousand people have fallen under a trap of floods and a Nepal Army squad is attempting to rescue them.

Seasonal streams at different parts of Dharan Sub Metropolis swept away 35 houses, however causing no human casualty.

Likewise, traffic along the Dharan-Dhankuta road has been disrupted due to a landslide near the Nisane Stream in Dharan-13.

Similarly, an emergency rescue was conducted in the areas inundated by flood from the Budi River in Itahari flood to shift around one thousand affected to a safer place.

Arrangements have been made at the Local Shree Krishna Pranami Temple for their accommodation. RSS
