KATHMANDU: The Tokyo High Court has quashed a writ petition from prosecutors objecting a retrial for Govinda Mainali’s case. Govinda Mainali a Nepali was initially found guilty of raping and murdering a Japanese sex-worker for money in 1997 but later the court had released him from Prison after DNA tests confirmed his innocence.
The Tokyo High Court had released Mainali after a retrial in June. However the prosecution had objected to the court’s decision through a writ petition.
On Tuesday morning, the court however trashed the objection and directed authorities to wrap up the case after reviewing it for the last time. Once the case is closed, Mainali can file a suit demanding compensation from the Japanese government for wrongfully imprisoning him.
Before being released Mainali had spent 15 youthful years in prison, for a crime that he had never committed.
